Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
क्षमा यस्मिन् दमस्त्यागः सत्यम् धर्मः कृतज्ञता ।
अप्यहिम्सा च भूतानाम् तमृते का गतिर्मम ॥२-१२-३३॥
kṣamā yasmin damastyāgaḥ satyam dharmaḥ kṛtajñatā । apyahimsā ca bhūtānām tamṛte kā gatirmama ॥2-12-33॥
Translation
In whom reside forgiveness, self-control, renunciation, truth, dharma, gratitude, and non-violence towards all beings—what is my fate/destination without him?

जिसमें क्षमा, इंद्रिय-दमन, त्याग, सत्य, धर्म, कृतज्ञता और प्राणियों के प्रति अहिंसा (दया) है—उस राम के बिना मेरी क्या गति होगी?
English Commentary
Dasharatha identifies Rama as the repository of all cardinal virtues: forgiveness, self-control, truth, and non-violence (ahimsā). The rhetorical question, "What is my fate without him?" (tamṛte kā gatirmama), signifies existential dread. Dasharatha implies that his survival is linked to Dharma, and since Rama is the personification of Dharma, separation implies death or a descent into a hellish existence. He pleads that stripping him of Rama is akin to stripping his soul of its essential virtues and hope.

दशरथ राम को 'धर्म का विग्रह' (embodiment of Dharma) मान रहे हैं। यहाँ अहिंसा, सत्य और कृतज्ञता जैसे नैतिक मूल्यों की चर्चा है। 'तमृते का गतिर्मम'—यह पंक्ति राजा की अस्तित्वगत हताशा (existential despair) को दर्शाती है। वे कह रहे हैं कि राम केवल उनके पुत्र नहीं, बल्कि उनके जीवन का आधार हैं। जैसे धर्म के बिना जीवन व्यर्थ है, वैसे ही इन गुणों से युक्त राम के बिना दशरथ का जीवन शून्य है। वे परोक्ष रूप से कह रहे हैं कि राम के जाने का अर्थ है दशरथ का अंत।
