यदि दत्वा वरौ राजन् पुनः प्रत्यनुतप्यसे ।
धार्मिकत्वम् कथम् वीर पृथिव्याम् कथयिष्यसि ॥२-१२-३९॥
yadi datvā varau rājan punaḥ pratyanutapyase । dhārmikatvam katham vīra pṛthivyām kathayiṣyasi ॥2-12-39॥
Translation
O King, if after granting the two boons you now regret it, how, O Hero, will you speak of your righteousness/integrity on earth?

हे राजन्! यदि दो वर देकर अब तुम पश्चाताप कर रहे हो, तो हे वीर! तुम पृथ्वी पर अपनी धार्मिकता (सत्यनिष्ठा) का बखान कैसे करोगे?
English Commentary
Kaikeyi shifts tactics from emotional negotiation to attacking the King's reputation. She targets his most cherished asset: his identity as a righteous (dhārmika) ruler. She challenges him, asking how he can claim to be a man of integrity if he regrets a promise once made. The use of the word Vīra (Hero) is sarcastic, implying that backtracking on a vow is cowardly. She effectively traps Dasharatha in a moral bind, forcing him to choose between his love for his son and his lifelong commitment to truth (Satya).

कैकेयी अब भावनात्मक प्रहार छोड़कर राजा के 'अहंकार' और 'प्रतिष्ठा' पर चोट करती है। वह जानती है कि दशरथ को अपनी 'धर्मज्ञ' छवि सबसे प्रिय है। वह प्रश्न करती है कि यदि रघुकुल का राजा अपना वचन देकर मुकर जाएगा, तो दुनिया उसे क्या कहेगी? 'वीर' शब्द का प्रयोग यहाँ व्यंग्यात्मक है—मानो वह कह रही हो कि वचन से फिरना कायरता है, वीरता नहीं। वह दशरथ को एक नैतिक संकट (Dharma-sankat) में डाल रही है जहाँ पुत्र-प्रेम और सत्य-प्रतिज्ञा एक दूसरे के विरोधी खड़े हैं।
