एकाहमपि पश्येयम् यद्यहम् राममातरम् ।
अञ्जलिम् प्रतिगृह्णन्तीम् श्रेयो ननु मृतिर्मम ॥२-१२-४८॥
ekāhamapi paśyeyam yadyaham rāmamātaram । añjalim pratigṛhṇantīm śreyo nanu mṛtirmama ॥ ॥2-12-48॥
Translation
If I were to see Rama's mother (Kausalya) receiving respectful salutations with folded hands even for a single day, then death is indeed better for me.

यदि मैं एक दिन के लिए भी राम की माता (कौशल्या) को दूसरों से हाथ जोड़कर सम्मान प्राप्त करते हुए देखूँ, तो मेरे लिए निश्चय ही मृत्यु श्रेयस्कर (बेहतर) है।
English Commentary
This verse exposes the raw nerve of Kaikeyi's motivation: intense jealousy toward Kausalya. It reveals that her demand for Rama's exile is driven less by love for Bharata and more by an inability to tolerate Kausalya's elevation to the status of Queen Mother. The phrase 'receiving respectful salutations' implies the social hierarchy where Kausalya would be the supreme matriarch. Kaikeyi explicitly states that death is preferable to witnessing Kausalya’s supremacy even for twenty-four hours. This marks a transition in the narrative from political maneuvering to a deep-seated domestic feud, where Kaikeyi’s pride cannot withstand the prospect of being subservient to the woman she has successfully dominated for years.

यहाँ कैकेयी के ह्रदय में बसी गहरी ईर्ष्या और द्वेष का पता चलता है। यह श्लोक स्पष्ट करता है कि वरदान मांगने का मुख्य कारण केवल भरत का राज्य नहीं, बल्कि कौशल्या के प्रति उसकी हीनभावना और जलन है। कैकेयी के लिए 'अञ्जलिम् प्रतिगृह्णन्तीम्' (हाथ जोड़कर सम्मान स्वीकार करना) एक ऐसा दृश्य है जो उसे मृत्यु से भी अधिक कष्टदायक लगता है। यह दर्शाता है कि वह किसी भी स्थिति में अपनी सौतन कौशल्या को राजमाता के रूप में पूजित होते नहीं देख सकती। उसकी यह जिद अब राजनीतिक न रहकर पूरी तरह से व्यक्तिगत अहंकार और द्वेष का रूप ले चुकी है, जहाँ वह अपने जीवन से अधिक महत्व अपने अहंकार की तुष्टि को दे रही है।
