एतावदुक्त्वा वचनम् कैकेयी विरराम ह ।
विलपन्तम् च राजानम् न प्रतिव्याजहार सा ॥२-१२-५०॥
etāvaduktvā vacanam kaikeyī virarāma ha । vilapantam ca rājānam na prativyājahāra sā ॥ ॥2-12-50॥
Translation
Having spoken these words, Kaikeyi fell silent. She did not reply to the lamenting King.
हिंदी अनुवाद
इतना वचन कहकर कैकेयी चुप हो गई। विलाप करते हुए राजा को उसने कोई उत्तर नहीं दिया (वह मौन साधे रही)।
English Commentary
Kaikeyi’s silence here is strategic and cruel. After delivering her ultimatum, she stops speaking, refusing to engage with the King’s grief. This silence serves as a wall against which Dasharatha’s pleas crash in vain. While the King is 'lamenting' (vilapantam), a reaction that usually elicits comfort from a spouse, Kaikeyi remains unmoved. Her refusal to reply signifies that the negotiation is over; she has stated her price and will not dignify his grief with a response until that price is met. It illustrates her complete emotional detachment from her husband in pursuit of her ambition.

कैकेयी का मौन उसके शब्दों से भी अधिक घातक है। अपनी मांग और शपथ रखने के बाद उसका चुप हो जाना उसकी हठधर्मिता को दर्शाता है। जब राजा दशरथ विलाप कर रहे थे, तब एक पत्नी होने के नाते उसे उन्हें सांत्वना देनी चाहिए थी, लेकिन वह पत्थर की मूरत बनकर बैठी रही। यह 'मौन' एक रणनीतिक दबाव है; वह जानती है कि अब राजा के पास विलाप करने के अलावा कोई चारा नहीं है। उसने अपना पासा फेंक दिया है और अब वह परिणाम की प्रतीक्षा कर रही है। उसकी निष्ठुरता यहाँ चरम पर है, क्योंकि वह अपने पति के आंसुओं के प्रति पूरी तरह उदासीन हो गई है।
