नाभ्यभाषत कैकेय्यिम् मुहूर्तम् व्याकुलेन्द्रियः ।
प्रैक्षतानिमिषो देवीम् प्रियामप्रियवादिनीम् ॥२-१२-५२॥
nābhyabhāṣata kaikeyyim muhūrtam vyākulendriyaḥ । praikṣatānimiṣo devīm priyāmapriyavādinīm ॥ ॥2-12-52॥
Translation
With his senses agitated, he did not speak to Kaikeyi for a moment. He stared unblinking at his beloved Queen, who was speaking unpleasant things.
हिंदी अनुवाद
अपनी व्याकुल इन्द्रियों के साथ, राजा क्षण भर के लिए कैकेयी से कुछ बोल न सके। वह अपनी उस प्रिय पत्नी को अपलक (बिना पलक झपकाए) देखते रहे जो अप्रिय बातें बोल रही थी।
English Commentary
Dasharatha is stunned into silence. The phrase vyākulendriyaḥ indicates that his sensory faculties are overwhelmed by shock. The most poignant element here is the juxtaposition of priyām (beloved) and apriyavādinīm (speaker of unpleasant things). He stares at her unblinkingly, trying to reconcile the image of the woman he loves with the cruel words coming from her mouth. This 'unblinking stare' is a sign of cognitive dissonance; he is paralyzed by the betrayal coming from the source of his affection. He cannot speak because his mind cannot yet process that his beloved has become his executioner.

इस श्लोक में राजा की 'व्याकुल इन्द्रियः' (इन्द्रियों का सुध-बुध खो देना) अवस्था का वर्णन है। सदमा इतना गहरा है कि वाणी अवरुद्ध हो गई है। सबसे महत्वपूर्ण विरोधाभास यहाँ 'प्रियाम् अप्रियवादिनीम्' (प्रिय होते हुए भी अप्रिय बोलने वाली) में है। दशरथ अभी भी उसे 'प्रिया' (प्रिय) मान रहे हैं, जिससे उनका दुख और बढ़ जाता है। हम जिससे प्रेम करते हैं, वही जब आघात पहुँचाता है, तो मष्तिष्क उसे स्वीकार नहीं कर पाता। राजा का उसे अपलक देखना (प्रैक्षत अनिमिशो) यह दर्शाता है कि वे विश्वास ही नहीं कर पा रहे हैं कि यह वही कैकेयी है जिससे वे इतना प्रेम करते थे।
