स देव्या व्यवसायम् च घोरम् च शपथम् कृतम् ।
ध्यात्वा रामेति निश्श्वस्य छिन्नस्तरुरिवापतत् ॥२-१२-५४॥
sa devyā vyavasāyam ca ghoram ca śapatham kṛtam । dhyātvā rāmeti niśśvasya chinnastaru rivāpatat ॥ ॥2-12-54॥
Translation
Thinking of the Queen's resolve and the terrible oath she had sworn, sighing 'Oh Rama!', he fell down like a felled tree.
हिंदी अनुवाद
रानी (कैकेयी) के उस निश्चय और की गई घोर शपथ का विचार करके, तथा 'हा राम!' ऐसा कहकर लंबी साँस लेते हुए राजा कटे हुए वृक्ष की भांति गिर पड़े।
English Commentary
The realization of Kaikeyi's unshakeable resolve and her binding oath drains the last bit of strength from the King. He realizes the trap is inescapable. The utterance 'Oh Rama' indicates that his final conscious thought before collapsing is of his son, highlighting that Rama is the core of his existence. The simile of the 'felled tree' (chinnastaru) is visually powerful; it suggests a loss of roots and structural integrity. Just as a tree cannot stand once its trunk is severed, Dasharatha cannot stand once the news of Rama's exile severs his connection to life. He collapses physically under the weight of emotional despair.

मानसिक आघात अब शारीरिक पतन में बदल गया है। राजा ने जब कैकेयी के 'व्यवसायम्' (दृढ़ निश्चय) और 'शपथ' पर विचार किया, तो उन्हें समझ आ गया कि अब कोई रास्ता नहीं बचा है। आशा की अंतिम किरण बुझते ही उनके प्राण कंठ में आ गए। 'हा राम' का उच्चारण उनके पुत्र-प्रेम और आसन्न विछोह की पीड़ा को दर्शाता है। 'छिन्नस्तरुरिवापतत्' (कटे वृक्ष की भांति गिरना) एक शक्तिशाली उपमा है। जैसे जड़ से कटा हुआ वृक्ष अपने भार से ही गिर जाता है, वैसे ही दशरथ, जिनका आधार (राम) उनसे छीना जा रहा था, चेतना शून्य होकर गिर पड़े।
