कुतो वा ते भयम् जातम् या त्वमेवम्विदम् वरम् ।
राष्ट्रे भरतमासीनम् वृणीषे राघवम् वने ॥२-१२-५८॥
kuto vā te bhayam jātam yā tvamevamvidam varam । rāṣṭre bharatamāsīnam vṛṇīṣe rāghavam vane ॥ ॥2-12-58॥
Translation
'From where has this fear arisen in you, that you choose such a boon—Bharata seated in the kingdom and Raghava in the forest?'
हिंदी अनुवाद
"तुम्हें कहाँ से (किस बात का) भय उत्पन्न हो गया है, जो तुम इस प्रकार का वर मांग रही हो—कि भरत राज्य पर बैठे और राघव (राम) वन में रहे?"
English Commentary
Dasharatha attempts to diagnose the root cause of Kaikeyi's demand. He correctly identifies that such extreme preemptive strikes often stem from bhayam (fear). He asks what she is afraid of. Does she fear for her safety or status if Rama becomes King? By asking this, he implies that her fear is baseless because Rama is righteous. He contrasts the two outcomes she desires—Bharata on the throne and Rama in the forest—trying to understand the logic that connects her fear to such a drastic solution. He is pleading for a rational motive behind her irrational cruelty.

राजा दशरथ यह समझने का प्रयास कर रहे हैं कि कैकेयी की असुरक्षा का कारण क्या है। आमतौर पर कठोर कदम 'भय' के कारण उठाए जाते हैं। राजा पूछते हैं 'कुतो वा ते भयम् जातम्'—तुम्हें किस बात का डर है? क्या तुम्हें लगता है राम भरत को नुकसान पहुँचाएगा? राजा को यह तर्कहीन लगता है कि अपनी सुरक्षा के लिए राम को वन भेजना पड़े। वे कैकेयी के मनोविज्ञान को समझने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं कि आखिर किस काल्पनिक डर ने उसे इतना क्रूर बना दिया है कि वह राम को वनवास दे रही है।
