Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
मुखवर्णम् विवर्णम् तम् यथैवेन्दुमुपप्लुतम् ।
कथम् द्रक्ष्यामि रामस्य वनम् गच्छेति भाषिते ॥२-१२-६३॥
mukhavarṇam vivarṇam tam yathaivendumupaplutam । katham drakṣyāmi rāmasya vanam gacheti bhāṣite ॥ ॥2-12-63॥
Translation
How shall I look upon that face of Rama, drained of color like the eclipsed moon, when "Go to the forest" is spoken? (Note: The second line repeats the thought of the previous verse in some recensions, emphasizing the visual horror).

जैसे ग्रहण लगे हुए चंद्रमा की कांति फीकी पड़ जाती है, वैसे ही वन जाने की बात सुनकर राम के मुख का रंग उड़ जाएगा (विवर्ण हो जाएगा); मैं उसे कैसे देख सकूंगा?
English Commentary
The metaphor of the upaplutam indum (eclipsed moon) is visually evocative. Just as the moon loses its luster during an eclipse, Dasharatha imagines Rama’s face turning pale (vivarṇam) upon hearing the news. The King focuses on the immediate, visceral reaction of his son. He is tormented by the guilt of being the one to cause this "eclipse." It signifies the transformation of a festive occasion into a dark tragedy, centered entirely on the physical expression of sorrow on Rama's face.

यहाँ 'इन्दुमुपप्लुतम्' (ग्रहण लगा हुआ चंद्रमा) की उपमा दी गई है। राम का मुख चंद्रमा के समान सौम्य और प्रिय है। वनवास का समाचार राहु (ग्रहण) की तरह होगा जो उस चमक को निगल जाएगा। राजा दशरथ एक पिता के रूप में उस क्षण की कल्पना करके सिहर उठते हैं जब राम के चेहरे की खुशी शोक में बदल जाएगी। वे अपनी ही आँखों से अपने पुत्र के तेज को बुझते हुए देखने का साहस नहीं जुटा पा रहे हैं। यह अपराधबोध उन्हें अंदर ही अंदर मार रहा है।
