Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
किम् माम् वक्ष्यन्ति राजानो नानादिग्भ्यः समागताः ।
बालो बतायमैक्ष्वाकश्चिरम् राज्यमकारयत् ॥२-१२-६५॥
kim mām vakṣyanti rājāno nānādigbhyaḥ samāgatāḥ । bālo batāyamaikṣvākaściram rājyamakārayat ॥ ॥2-12-65॥
Translation
What will the kings who have assembled from various directions say to me? "Alas! This Ikshvaku king is a child (foolish); he ruled for a long time (undeservedly)."
हिंदी अनुवाद
नाना दिशाओं से आए हुए राजा लोग मुझे क्या कहेंगे? (वे कहेंगे) 'हाय! यह इक्ष्वाकुवंशी राजा (दशरथ) बालक (मूर्ख) है, जिसने (व्यर्थ ही) इतने लंबे समय तक राज्य किया।'
English Commentary
The King worries about his legacy and reputation among his peers. Dignitaries have gathered for a celebration, and instead, they will witness a fiasco. Dasharatha imagines their gossip: they will call him bālaḥ (a child/foolish). The irony is biting—he has ruled for decades (ciram), yet this single act of submission to Kaikeyi will undo his reputation for wisdom. He fears going down in history not as a sage-king, but as a senile ruler manipulated by a young wife, rendering his long reign meaningless in the eyes of the world.

दशरथ को अपनी 'कीर्ति' (प्रतिष्ठा) की चिंता सता रही है। राज्याभिषेक के उत्सव के लिए देश-विदेश से राजा आए हुए हैं। जब वे देखेंगे कि राजा अपनी पत्नी के कहने पर अपना निर्णय बदल रहा है, तो वे उसका उपहास करेंगे। 'बालो' (बालक/नासमझ) शब्द का उपयोग आत्म-ग्लानि को दर्शाता है। लोग कहेंगे कि यह राजा वृद्ध होकर भी बच्चों जैसा कच्चा है, जिसका अपनी बुद्धि पर कोई नियंत्रण नहीं। एक महान शासक के लिए 'मूर्ख' कहलाने का डर मृत्यु से भी बड़ा होता है।
