Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यदि सत्यम् ब्रवीम्येतत्तदसत्यम् भविष्यति ।
किम् माम् वक्ष्यति कौसल्या राघवे वनमास्थिते ॥२-१२-६७॥
yadi satyam bravīmyetattadasatyam bhaviṣyati । kim mām vakṣyati kausalyā rāghave vanamāsthite ॥ ॥2-12-67॥
Translation
Even if I speak this truth, it will appear to be a lie (because it is so incredible). What will Kausalya say to me when Raghava has taken up residence in the forest?
हिंदी अनुवाद
यदि मैं यह सत्य भी कहूँ (कि कैकेयी के कारण ऐसा किया), तो भी यह असत्य जैसा ही लगेगा (क्योंकि यह विश्वास करने योग्य नहीं है)। जब राम वन चले जाएंगे, तब कौशल्या मुझसे क्या कहेगी?
English Commentary
The dilemma of credibility haunts Dasharatha. The truth—that a king banished his perfect son because of an old promise to a junior wife—is so absurd that it sounds like asatyam (a lie/untruth). It defies all logic of statecraft and dharma. His thoughts then turn to the primary victim, Kausalya. Her confrontation terrifies him more than the kings or sages. He anticipates the crushing guilt of facing the mother whose son he has stolen away, knowing he has no justifiable answer for her.

दशरथ की स्थिति विचित्र है। सत्य इतना कड़वा और तर्कहीन है कि कोई उस पर विश्वास नहीं करेगा। लोग सोचेंगे कि राजा झूठ बोल रहा है या कोई और छिपा हुआ कारण है। अब राजा का ध्यान अपनी पटरानी कौशल्या की ओर जाता है। कौशल्या, जो राम की माता हैं, उनका सामना करना सबसे कठिन होगा। जिसने जीवन भर धर्म का पालन किया, उस माँ को वे क्या जवाब देंगे कि "मैंने तुम्हारे निर्दोष बेटे को वन भेज दिया"? कौशल्या की चुप्पी या प्रश्न राजा के लिए सबसे बड़ा दंड होगा।
