Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अपथ्यव्यञ्जनोपेतम् भुक्तमन्नमिवातुरम् ।
विप्रकारम् च रामस्य सम्प्रयाणम् वनस्य च ॥२-१२-७१॥
apathyavyañjanopetam bhuktamannamivāturam । viprakāram ca rāmasya samprayāṇam vanasya ca ॥ ॥2-12-71॥
Translation
Just as food mixed with unwholesome ingredients destroys/pains a sick person, so too will the insult to Rama and his departure to the forest (destroy me).

जैसे कुपथ्य (हानिकारक) मसालों/व्यंजनों से युक्त भोजन किसी रोगी (आतुर) को मार डालता है (या कष्ट देता है), वैसे ही राम का यह तिरस्कार और वन-गमन मुझे मार डालेगा।
English Commentary
Dasharatha uses a medical metaphor to predict his own death. He compares himself to a sick man (āturam) and the news of Rama's exile to apathya anna (food forbidden for a patient/unhealthy food). Just as a sick body collapses when fed poison or unwholesome food, Dasharatha's spirit will collapse under the weight of Rama's banishment and humiliation (viprakāram). It is a lucid recognition of his frailty; he knows this trauma is not something he can digest or survive. It is a fatal dose of grief.

राजा दशरथ अपनी तुलना एक 'आतुर' (बीमार व्यक्ति) से करते हैं। बीमार व्यक्ति के लिए 'अपथ्य' (परहेज न किया गया भोजन) विष समान होता है। राम का वनवास और उनका अपमान ('विप्रकारम्') राजा के लिए उसी विषैले भोजन के समान है। वे जानते हैं कि उनका शरीर और मन पहले ही कमजोर है (वृद्धावस्था और शोक के कारण), और यह घटना उनकी मृत्यु का कारण बनेगी। यह श्लोक भविष्य की घटनाओं (दशरथ की मृत्यु) का स्पष्ट संकेत देता है।
