Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सुमित्रा प्रेक्ष्य मां भीता कथम् मे विश्वसिष्यति ।
कृपणम् बत वैदेही श्रोष्यति द्वयमप्रियम् ॥२-१२-७२॥
sumitrā prekṣya māṃ bhītā katham me viśvasiṣyati । kṛpaṇam bata vaidehī śroṣyati dvayamapriyam ॥ ॥2-12-72॥
Translation
Seeing me terrified/in this state, how will Sumitra trust me? Alas! The poor Vaidehi (Sita) will hear two unpleasant things.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मुझे (इस दीन अवस्था में) देखकर डरी हुई सुमित्रा मुझ पर कैसे विश्वास करेगी? हाय! बेचारी वैदेही (सीता) दो अप्रिय समाचार सुनेगी।
English Commentary
Dasharatha’s thoughts shift to the collateral damage of his decision. He worries about Sumitra, Lakshmana’s mother, fearing that seeing him in this broken state will destroy her faith in him as a protector and husband. He then laments for Vaidehi (Sita), calling her kṛpaṇam (pitiable/wretched). He realizes that his decision will deliver a dual blow to the innocent daughter-in-law. The 'two unpleasant things' refers to the double tragedy she is about to face, highlighting Dasharatha's awareness that his actions are destroying the happiness of the most innocent members of his household.

राजा दशरथ अब अपने परिवार के अन्य सदस्यों, विशेषकर लक्ष्मण की माता सुमित्रा और राम की पत्नी सीता के बारे में सोच रहे हैं। सुमित्रा, जो स्वभाव से शांत और समझदार हैं, राजा की यह दशा देखकर भयभीत हो जाएंगी और शायद उन पर (राजा के न्याय पर) विश्वास खो देंगी। दशरथ को सबसे अधिक पीड़ा सीता (वैदेही) के लिए हो रही है। 'कृपणम्' (बेचारी/दया के योग्य) शब्द सीता की कोमलता को दर्शाता है। उसे दो आघात एक साथ सहने होंगे—एक तो राम का वनवास और दूसरा राजा दशरथ की आसन्न मृत्यु (जो अगले श्लोक में स्पष्ट है)।
