धिक्करिष्यन्ति रथ्यासु सुरापम् ब्राह्मणम् यथा ।
अहो दुःखमहो कृच्छ्रम् यत्र वाचः क्षमे तव ॥२-१२-७९॥
dhikkariṣyanti rathyāsu surāpam brāhmaṇam yathā । aho duḥkhamaho kṛcchram yatra vācaḥ kṣame tava ॥ ॥2-12-79॥
Translation
They will condemn me just as they condemn a Brahmin who drinks liquor in the streets. Oh, the misery! Oh, the difficulty! That I have to tolerate your words.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जैसे लोग गलियों में शराबी ब्राह्मण को धिक्कारते हैं, वैसे ही वे मुझे धिक्कारेंगे। अहो! कितना दुःख है, कितना कष्ट है कि मुझे तुम्हारी (ऐसी कटु) बातें सहनी पड़ रही हैं।
English Commentary
The comparison to a surāpam brāhmaṇam (a liquor-drinking Brahmin) implies a fall from high grace into deep taboo. Just as a priest violates his sacred vows by drinking, Dasharatha feels he has violated the sacred duty of a father and king. He anticipates public shaming in the streets (rathyāsu). The verse ends with a cry of pure anguish (aho duḥkham), lamenting the specific torture of having to silently endure Kaikeyi's verbal abuse and demands because he is bound by his oath.

समाज में मदिरापान करने वाला ब्राह्मण पतित माना जाता है और लोग उसे सार्वजनिक रूप से धिक्कारते हैं। दशरथ को लगता है कि राम को वनवास देने के बाद उनकी स्थिति भी वैसी ही घृणित हो जाएगी। वे 'धिक्करिष्यन्ति' (धिक्कारेंगे) शब्द से अपने भविष्य के अपमान की कल्पना कर रहे हैं। श्लोक के अंत में वे अपनी लाचारी प्रकट करते हैं—राजा होकर भी वे अपनी पत्नी की अपमानजनक बातें सुनने और सहने ('क्षमे') के लिए विवश हैं। यह उनकी शक्तिहीनता की पराकाष्ठा है।
