Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
दुःखमेवंविधम् प्राप्तम् पुराकृतमिवाशुभम् ।
चिरम् खलु मया पापे त्वम् पापेनाभिरक्षिता ॥२-१२-८०॥
duḥkhamevamvidham prāptam purākṛtamivāśubham । ciram khalu mayā pāpe tvam pāpenābhirakṣitā ॥ ॥2-12-80॥
Translation
I have obtained this sorrow like the result of a sin committed in a past life. O sinful woman! Indeed, through my own sin/misfortune, I have protected/nurtured you for a long time.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मुझे यह दुःख पूर्वजन्म में किए गए किसी पाप कर्म के फल जैसा प्राप्त हुआ है। हे पापिनी! निश्चय ही मैंने (अपने ही) पाप (दुर्भाग्य) से तुझे लंबे समय तक अपनी गोद में पाला/रक्षा की।
English Commentary
Struggling to rationalize his suffering, Dasharatha attributes it to karma—sins from a past life (purākṛtam). He addresses Kaikeyi directly as pāpe (O sinner), acknowledging that he has unwittingly nurtured his own destroyer. The phrase pāpena abhirakṣitā suggests deep regret: he feels that by protecting and loving her for so long, he was actually feeding the very sin/evil that has now risen to consume him. He views her presence in his life as the manifestation of his bad karma.

जब मनुष्य को कोई कारण समझ नहीं आता, तो वह इसे 'प्रारब्ध' या पिछले जन्मों का फल मानता है। दशरथ को लगता है कि यह 'पुराकृतम् अशुभम्' (पुराना पाप) है जो अब फल दे रहा है। वे कैकेयी को 'पापे' (पापिनी) कहते हैं और पछताते हैं कि उन्होंने उसे इतने वर्षों तक संरक्षण दिया। उन्हें लगता है कि वे अनजाने में अपनी ही मृत्यु और विनाश को पाल रहे थे। 'पापेन अभिरक्षिता' का अर्थ यह भी हो सकता है कि "मेरे पापों के कारण ही तुम जैसी (बुरी) पत्नी मुझे मिली और मैंने तुम्हें रखा"।
