Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अज्ञानादुपसम्पन्ना रज्जुर् उद्बन्धनी यथा ।
रममाणस्त्वया सार्धम् मृत्युम् त्वां नाभिलक्षये ॥२-१२-८१॥
ajñānādupasampannā rajjur udbandhanī yathā । ramamāṇastvayā sārdham mṛtyum tvām nābhilakṣaye ॥ ॥2-12-81॥
Translation
Like a hanging noose placed around the neck out of ignorance, while enjoying/romancing with you, I did not recognize you as my death.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जैसे कोई अज्ञानतावश गले में फांसी की रस्सी (रज्जु) डाल ले (यह सोचकर कि वह माला है), वैसे ही मैंने तुम्हारे साथ रमण (प्रेम) करते हुए यह नहीं पहचाना कि तुम मेरी साक्षात् मृत्यु हो।
English Commentary
Dasharatha uses the visceral metaphor of a noose (rajju). He compares his relationship with Kaikeyi to a man unknowingly placing a hangman's rope around his own neck. While he was busy enjoying marital bliss (ramamāṇaḥ), he was blind to the reality that she represented his demise. It is a startling admission of how sexual or emotional infatuation masked the danger she posed. He now sees her not as a lover, but as the instrument of his execution (mṛtyum).

यह श्लोक राजा के अंधप्रेम और उसके घातक परिणाम का वर्णन करता है। कैकेयी उनके लिए 'उद्बन्धनी रज्जु' (फांसी की रस्सी) सिद्ध हुई। दशरथ कहते हैं कि वे अज्ञानी थे। जब वे कैकेयी के साथ सुखद समय बिता रहे थे ('रममाणः'), तो उन्हें आभास नहीं था कि वे अपनी मौत को गले लगा रहे हैं। प्रेम में व्यक्ति अक्सर खतरे के संकेतों को नजरअंदाज कर देता है। राजा स्वीकार करते हैं कि कैकेयी पत्नी के रूप में छद्म वेश में आई हुई उनकी मृत्यु ही थी।
