अविज्ञानान्नृपसुता व्याLई तीक्ष्णविषा यथा ।
जीवलोको यदा सर्वो रामस्याह गुणस्तवम् ॥ ॥२-१२-९॥
avijñānānnṛpasutā vyālī tīkṣṇaviṣā yathā । jīvaloko yadā sarvo rāmasyāha guṇastavam ॥ ॥2-12-9॥
Translation
"Out of ignorance, holding you as a princess, I held a sharp-venomed female serpent. When the entire living world recites the praise of Rama's virtues..."

"अज्ञानवश मैंने तुझे राजकन्या समझकर वैसे ही घर में रख लिया, जैसे कोई तीखे विष वाली नागिन (व्याली) को रख ले। जब सारा संसार राम के गुणों की स्तुति कर रहा है..."
English Commentary
Dasharatha uses a classic metaphor: the snake in the bosom. He laments that out of 'avijnanat' (ignorance), he mistook a 'vyali' (she-serpent) with 'tikshnavisha' (potent poison) for a princess. The contrast in the second line underscores the insanity of her demand: while the 'sarvo jivaloko' (entire living world) praises Rama, she alone seeks his banishment.

दशरथ अपनी भूल सुधारते हुए कहते हैं कि वह 'नृपसुता' (राजकुमारी) नहीं, बल्कि 'तीक्ष्णविषा व्याली' (तेज जहर वाली नागिन) है। 'अविज्ञानात' (अज्ञानता से) उन्होंने उसे गले लगाया। दूसरी पंक्ति में वे कहते हैं कि जब पूरी दुनिया राम के गुणों का गान कर रही है, तब कैकेयी ही एकमात्र है जिसे राम में दोष दिख रहा है। (यहाँ राजा की हताशा और राम की लोकप्रियता का विरोधाभास है)।
