सर्वभूतेषु चावज्ञा यथा पापकृतस्तथा ।
कथम् रथैर्विभुर्गत्वा गजाश्वैश्च मुहुर्मुहुः ॥२-१२-९७॥
Sarvabhūteṣu cāvajñā yathā pāpakṛtastathā |
Katham rathairvibhurgatvā gajāśvaiśca muhurmuhuḥ ॥2-12-97॥
Translation
Just as a sinner is despised by all beings, so shall I be despised. How will Rama, who is powerful and accustomed to traveling frequently on chariots, elephants, and horses, go on foot?

जैसे पापी मनुष्य का सब प्राणियों में अनादर होता है, वैसे ही मेरा भी होगा। जो राम सदा रथों, हाथियों और घोड़ों पर बार-बार चला करते थे, वे अब पैदल कैसे जाएंगे?
English Commentary
Dasharatha draws a parallel between himself and a 'pāpakṛt' (sinner), anticipating universal condemnation for his actions. He feels he has lost the moral authority of a King. The second half highlights the drastic transition Rama faces—from the height of royal luxury to the hardships of an ascetic. The word 'Vibhu' denotes Rama's capability and majesty, yet Dasharatha worries about his physical inability to cope with walking on foot, given that Rama has always been transported by chariots and elephants. It emphasizes the stark contrast between Rama's royal upbringing and the harsh exile Kaikeyi is demanding.

महाराज दशरथ यहाँ अपनी तुलना एक 'पापकृत' (पापी) से कर रहे हैं। उन्हें भय है कि राम को वन भेजने के अधर्म के कारण प्रजा और समस्त प्राणी उन्हें घृणा की दृष्टि से देखेंगे। श्लोक का दूसरा भाग पिता के वात्सल्य और पीड़ा को दर्शाता है। दशरथ राम के 'विभु' (समर्थ/वैभवशाली) रूप को याद करते हैं जो सदा राजसी वाहनों (गज, अश्व, रथ) के अभ्यस्त हैं। उन्हें यह कल्पना करके ही कष्ट हो रहा है कि वही कोमल और राजसी राम अब कंकड़-पत्थरों भरे वन के रास्ते पर नंगे पैर कैसे चलेंगे। यह पिता के हृदय का विलाप है जो पुत्र के भावी शारीरिक कष्टों को सोचकर द्रवित हो रहा है।
