कथमिन्दीवरश्यामं दीर्घबाहुं महाबलम् ।
अभिराममहं रामम् प्रेषयिष्यामि दण्डकान् ॥२-१३-१०॥
Kathamindīvaraśyāmam dīrghabāhum mahābalam |
Abhirāmamaham rāmam preṣayiṣyāmi daṇḍakān ॥2-13-10॥
Translation
How shall I send Rama—who is dark like a blue lotus, long-armed, mighty, and delightful to all—to the Dandaka forest?

मैं नीलकमल के समान श्याम वर्ण वाले, लंबी भुजाओं वाले, महाबली और सबके मन को भाने वाले (अभिराम) राम को दंडक वन में कैसे भेजूँगा?
English Commentary
The King visualizes the physical perfection of his son. He sees Rama's complexion like the blue lotus ("indīvaraśyāmam") and his protective power ("mahābalam"). The play on words "Abhirāmam Rāmam" (Rama who is the source of delight) underscores the irony: the source of the kingdom's joy is being sent to a place of misery. Mentioning "Dandaka" specifically evokes danger, demons, and desolation, contrasting sharply with the delicate beauty of the prince described in the first half of the verse.

दशरथ की आँखों के सामने राम का रूप तैर रहा है। 'इन्दीवरश्यामं' (नीलकमल जैसा सांवला) राम की शारीरिक कांति का वर्णन है। 'दीर्घबाहुं' (घुटनों तक लंबी भुजाएं) महापुरुष का लक्षण है। 'अभिराम' का अर्थ है जो दर्शन मात्र से आनंद दे। दशरथ तुलना कर रहे हैं: एक तरफ इतना सुकुमार और सुंदर राजकुमार, और दूसरी तरफ 'दण्डकान्' (भयानक दंडक वन)। यह विरोधाभास पिता के हृदय को विदीर्ण कर रहा है। वे अपनी विवशता को कोस रहे हैं कि राजा होकर भी वे इस अन्याय को रोकने में असमर्थ हैं।
