Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
विललाप आर्तवद् दुःखम् गगनासक्तलोचनः ।
न प्रभातम् त्वयेच्छामि मयायम् रचितोऽञ्जलिः ॥२-१३-१७॥
Vilalāpa ārtavad duḥkham gaganāsaktalocanaḥ |
Na prabhātam tvayecchāmi mayāyam racito'ñjaliḥ ॥2-13-17॥
Translation
Fixing his eyes on the sky, he lamented in distress and grief: "I do not desire the dawn to be brought about by you. I join my palms in supplication to you (O Night)."
हिंदी अनुवाद
आकाश में दृष्टि जमाए हुए (गगनासक्तलोचनः), राजा आर्तनाद करते हुए दुःखपूर्वक विलाप करने लगे—"हे रात्रि! मैं नहीं चाहता कि तुम्हारे द्वारा प्रभात हो (सवेरा न हो)। मैं तुम्हारे सामने यह हाथ जोड़ता हूँ (अंजलि रचितः)।"
English Commentary
In a moment of poetic desperation, Dasharatha personifies the Night. With eyes fixed on the empty sky ("gaganāsaktalocanaḥ"), he begs the night not to end. He knows dawn signifies the execution of Kaikeyi's boon. He offers an "añjali" (folded hands)—a gesture of worship or begging—to the darkness, pleading, "I do not desire the dawn." It is a poignant attempt to freeze time. The mighty King is reduced to begging the celestial bodies to alter their course to save his son.

दशरथ अब रात्रि (Nisha/Ratri) से बात कर रहे हैं। वे आकाश के तारों को देख रहे हैं। वे जानते हैं कि सूर्योदय होते ही राम को वन जाना पड़ेगा। इसलिए वे रात्रि से विनती करते हैं, "न प्रभातम् इच्छामि" (मैं सवेरा नहीं चाहता)। वे एक राजा होकर भी काल (समय) के सामने हाथ जोड़ रहे हैं ('रचितोऽञ्जलिः'). यह एक असंभव प्रार्थना है, जो उनकी विवशता को दर्शाती है। वे चाहते हैं कि समय थम जाए ताकि वह अभिशप्त घड़ी कभी न आए।
