स्वर्गेऽपि खलु रामस्य कुशलं दैवतैरहम् ।
प्रत्यादेशादभिहितं धारयिष्ये कथं बत ॥२-१३-६॥
Svarge'pi khalu rāmasya kuśalam daivatairaham |
Pratyādeśādabhihitam dhārayiṣye katham bata ॥2-13-6॥
Translation
Even in Heaven, when asked by the gods about the welfare of Rama, how indeed shall I bear to give the answer? Alas!
हिंदी अनुवाद
(मृत्यु के बाद) स्वर्ग में भी जब देवता मुझसे राम का कुशल-मंगल पूछेंगे, तो मैं उन्हें क्या उत्तर दूँगा? (कि मैंने उसे वन भेज दिया?) हाय! मैं उस उत्तर (के भार) को कैसे सहन करूँगा?
English Commentary
King Dasharatha is contemplating his existence in the afterlife. He is certain that this grief will kill him. In the Vedic worldview, a righteous King expects to join the gods in Heaven. Dasharatha worries about the shame he will face there. When the celestial beings ask for news of the virtuous Rama, Dasharatha will be forced to admit his betrayal. The word "katham" (how) expresses his inability to face this moral scrutiny even after death. He feels he will carry the stigma of this injustice into the next world.

राजा दशरथ यहाँ अपनी मृत्यु के बाद की स्थिति (paraloka) के बारे में चिंतित हैं। वे जानते हैं कि राम को वन भेजने के वियोग में उनकी मृत्यु निश्चित है। भारतीय दर्शन के अनुसार, पुण्यकर्म करने वाले राजा स्वर्ग जाते हैं। दशरथ सोच रहे हैं कि जब वे स्वर्ग में पूर्वजों और देवताओं से मिलेंगे और वे पूछेंगे, "आपका प्रिय पुत्र राम कैसा है?", तो वे क्या मुंह दिखाएंगे? यह कहना कि "मैंने उसे वन निकाल दिया," एक पिता और एक धर्मात्मा राजा के लिए अत्यंत लज्जाजनक होगा। यह श्लोक दशरथ के 'यश' और 'परलोक' के भय को दर्शाता है।
