धर्म बन्धेन बद्धो अस्मि नष्टा च मम चेतना ।
ज्येष्ठम् पुत्रम् प्रियम् रामम् द्रष्टुम् इच्चामि धार्मिकम् ॥ ॥२-१४-२४॥
Dharma bandhena baddho asmi naṣṭā ca mama cetanā । Jyeṣṭham putram priyam rāmam draṣṭum iccāmi dhārmikam ॥ ॥2-14-24॥
Translation
I am bound by the bond of Dharma (duty/truth), and my consciousness is fading. I wish to see my beloved eldest son, the righteous Rama.

मैं धर्म के बंधन में बंधा हुआ हूँ और मेरी चेतना लुप्त हो रही है। मैं अपने प्रिय ज्येष्ठ पुत्र, धर्मात्मा राम को देखना चाहता हूँ।
English Commentary
Dasaratha finally breaks. He admits defeat, stating, "I am bound by the bond of Dharma." He acknowledges that he cannot violate his promise, no matter how painful. The stress is so immense that he feels his cetana (consciousness/sanity) slipping away. In this moment of despair, his only anchor is Rama. He asks to see his "beloved eldest son," emphasizing Rama's status as dharmikam (righteous). Dasaratha knows that Rama, being righteous, will understand the dilemma and accept the decision to save his father's honor. It is a tragic request: he wants to see the person he loves most, only to deliver the news that will separate them forever. It captures the crushing weight of truthfulness (Satya) in the protagonist's life.

यह दशरथ का समर्पण है। वे स्वीकार करते हैं कि वे 'धर्म बन्धेन' (धर्म के बंधन) में फंस चुके हैं, जिसका अर्थ है कि वे वरदान देने से इनकार नहीं कर सकते। इस मानसिक संघर्ष के कारण उनकी 'चेतना' (होश/विवेक) नष्ट हो रही है। मृत्यु या मूर्छा के निकट होते हुए भी, उनकी एकमात्र अंतिम इच्छा राम को देखना है। वे राम के लिए 'धार्मिकम्' (धर्म का पालन करने वाला) विशेषण का प्रयोग करते हैं, यह जानते हुए कि केवल राम ही इस स्थिति को समझेंगे और पिता की लाज रखेंगे। यह श्लोक राजा की लाचारी और पुत्र के प्रति उनके अगाध प्रेम का संगम है। वे जानते हैं कि राम को बुलाना उसे वन भेजने के लिए है, फिर भी वे उसे एक बार देखना चाहते हैं।
