Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
वाग्भिः परमतुष्टाभिरभिष्टोतुं प्रचक्रमे ।
ततः सूतो यथाकालं पार्थिवस्य निवेशने ॥ ॥२-१४-४६॥
Vāgbhiḥ paramatuṣṭābhirabhiṣṭotuṃ pracakrame । Tataḥ sūto yathākālaṃ pārthivasya niveśane ॥ ॥2-14-46॥
Translation
"Then the Suta (Sumantra), in the King's dwelling, began to praise him with extremely pleasing words, in accordance with the time (morning custom)."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"तब सूत (सुमन्त्र) ने राजा के भवन में, समय के अनुसार (प्रातःकालीन बेला में), अत्यंत प्रसन्नतादायक वाणी से राजा की स्तुति करना प्रारंभ किया।"
English Commentary
Sumantra acts Yathākālaṃ (according to the time/protocol). It was the Suta's duty to wake the monarch with panegyrics. He uses words described as Paramatuṣṭābhiḥ (extremely pleasing/satisfying), intending to start Dasharatha's biggest day with joy. The commentary must note the painful contrast: Sumantra represents the happy expectation of the kingdom, unaware that he is singing to a man who has effectively lost everything overnight. This routine act of waking the king becomes a poignant scene of misunderstanding.

'यथाकालं' (समय के अनुसार) शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है। राजाओं को ब्रह्ममुहूर्त या सूर्योदय के समय स्तुति-गान के साथ जगाना एक राजसी परंपरा थी। सुमन्त्र अपनी ड्यूटी कर रहे थे। उनकी वाणी 'परमतुष्टाभिः' (अत्यंत तुष्ट/प्रसन्न करने वाली) थी। वे ऐसे शब्दों का चयन कर रहे थे जो राजा का मन मोह लें और उनका दिन मंगलमय हो। लेकिन पाठक जानता है कि राजा जिस स्थिति में हैं, वहां ये मीठे शब्द विष के समान लग सकते हैं या व्यर्थ हैं। बाहर उत्सव की तैयारी और भीतर सुमन्त्र का मंगल-गान, दोनों दशरथ के दुख को और गहरा करते हैं।
