Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सरितां तु पतिः स्वल्पां मर्यादां सत्यमन्वितः ।
सत्यानुरोधात्समये वेलां स्वां नातिवर्तते ॥ ॥२-१४-६॥
Saritāṃ tu patiḥ svalpāṃ maryādāṃ satyamanvitaḥ । Satyānurodhātsamaye velāṃ svāṃ nātivartate ॥ ॥2-14-6॥
Translation
Even the Ocean, the Lord of Rivers, being bound by Truth, never transgresses its bounds (shoreline) at the appointed times (like high tide), keeping within its limits strictly for the sake of Truth.

नदियों का स्वामी (समुद्र) भी सत्य से बंधा होने के कारण अपनी मर्यादा (तट) का उल्लंघन नहीं करता, चाहे (पूर्णिमा आदि के) समय में जल कितना भी बढ़ जाए, वह अपनी सीमा नहीं लांघता।
English Commentary
Moving from human history to cosmic order, Kaikeyi points to the Ocean (Saritāṃ patiḥ). Despite its immense power, the ocean respects its shoreline (maryādāṃ). She argues that stability in the universe exists because powerful entities stick to their assigned boundaries (Truth). If Dasharatha breaks his word, he violates not just a promise to a wife, but the cosmic order (Rta) itself. She positions herself as the defender of this cosmic law, while painting Dasharatha as a potential chaos-bringer if he refuses.

अब कैकेयी प्रकृति का उदाहरण देती है। समुद्र, जो विशाल और शक्तिशाली है, वह भी 'मर्यादा' का पालन करता है। यहाँ 'समय' शब्द का अर्थ है अवसर या प्रतिज्ञा। कैकेयी कह रही है कि जब जड़ प्रकृति भी ईश्वरीय नियमों (सत्य) का पालन करती है, तो इक्ष्वाकु वंश के राजा होकर दशरथ कैसे अपनी मर्यादा लांघ सकते हैं? वह दशरथ को घेर रही है—इतिहास (शिबि/अलर्क) और प्रकृति (समुद्र) दोनों का हवाला देकर वह सिद्ध करना चाहती है कि वचन तोड़ना अप्राकृतिक और अमर्यादित है।
