Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तदा सुमन्त्रं मन्त्रज्ञानां कैकेयी प्रत्युवाच ह ।
सुमन्त्र राजा रजनीं रामहर्षसमुत्सुकः ॥ ॥२-१४-६२॥
Tadā sumantraṃ mantrajñā kaikeyī pratyuvāca ha । Sumantra rājā rajanīṃ rāmaharṣasamutsukaḥ ॥ ॥2-14-62॥
Translation
"Then Kaikeyi, skilled in speech/policy, replied to Sumantra: 'O Sumantra! The King, being eager for the joy of Rama, (spent) the night...'"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"तब मर्म को जानने वाली (या बात बनाने में चतुर) कैकेयी ने सुमन्त्र को उत्तर दिया: 'हे सुमन्त्र! राजा पूरी रात राम के (राज्याभिषेक के) हर्ष और उत्सुकता के कारण...'"
English Commentary
Kaikeyi steps in to manipulate the narrative. She is described as Mantrajñā—knower of counsels/policy, or colloquially, manipulative. She fabricates a cover story for the King's condition. She claims Dasharatha is exhausted because he was Rāmaharṣasamutsukaḥ (eagerly excited for Rama's joy) all night. This is a masterful lie; she reinterprets the King's sleepless grief as sleepless excitement, thereby preventing Sumantra from suspecting the coup that has taken place. She needs Rama there to deliver the news, and she uses Sumantra to fetch him.
