राममानय भद्रं ते नात्र कार्या विचारणा ।
स मन्यमानः कल्याणम् हृदयेन नन्नन्ध च ॥ ॥२-१४-६४॥
rāmamānaya bhadraṃ te nātra kāryā vicāraṇā । sa manyamānaḥ kalyāṇam hṛdayena nannandha ca ॥ ॥2-14-64॥
Translation
(Kaikeyi speaks to Sumantra) "May good betide you; bring Rama here. You need not hesitate or deliberate on this matter." Believing this to be a joyous occasion regarding the coronation, Sumantra felt great delight in his heart.

(कैकेयी सुमन्त्र से कहती है) "तुम्हारा कल्याण हो, तुम राम को यहाँ ले आओ। इस विषय में तुम्हें कोई विचार (संकोच) नहीं करना चाहिए।" सुमन्त्र ने इसे शुभ समाचार मानकर हृदय से बड़ा हर्ष मनाया।
English Commentary
This verse captures a moment of profound dramatic irony. Kaikeyi, having just extorted the promise of Rama's exile from King Dasharatha, orders the royal charioteer Sumantra to fetch Rama. By using the phrase "bhadraṃ te" (may good betide you), she maintains a facade of normalcy, preventing Sumantra from suspecting the sinister reality. Sumantra interprets this urgency through the lens of his own expectations—he believes the King wants to see Rama to finalize the coronation details. His heart fills with joy ("nannandha"), highlighting the complete disconnect between the festive atmosphere engulfing Ayodhya and the tragedy unfolding in the private chambers. Sumantra’s innocence here serves to amplify the shock that follows; the loyal minister believes he is rushing towards a celebration, unknowingly becoming the messenger of doom.
