निष्क्रम्य जनसंबाधं ददर्श द्वारमग्रतः ।
ततः पुरस्तत्सासा विनिर्गतो ।
महीपतीन् द्वारगतो विलोकयन् ।
ददर्श पौरान् विविधान्महाधना ।
नुपस्थितान् द्वारमुपेत्य विष्ठतान् ॥ ॥२-१४-६८॥
niṣkramya janasaṃbādhaṃ dadarśa dvāramagrataḥ । tataḥ purastātsahasā vinirgato । mahīpatīn dvāragato vilokayan । dadarśa paurān vividhānmahādhanā । nupasthitān dvāramupetya viṣṭhatān ॥ ॥2-14-68॥
Translation
Exiting, he saw the gate ahead crowded with people. Coming out suddenly from there, and observing the kings stationed at the gate, he saw various wealthy citizens who had arrived and were waiting, having approached the entrance.

बाहर निकलकर उन्होंने देखा कि मुख्य द्वार लोगों की भीड़ से भरा हुआ है। वहां से सहसा बाहर आते हुए, द्वार पर स्थित राजाओं को देखते हुए, उन्होंने वहां उपस्थित और द्वार का आश्रय लेकर खड़े हुए नाना प्रकार के महाधनवान नागरिकों को देखा।
English Commentary
This verse paints the picture of the scene immediately outside the palace gates, contrasting sharply with the sombre scene inside. Sumantra encounters a "janasaṃbādhaṃ"—a crush of people. He sees vassal kings ("mahīpatīn") and wealthy, prominent citizens ("paurān mahādhanān") gathered in anticipation. They are all waiting for the festivities to begin, standing at the gate ready to serve or celebrate. This visual of the assembled elite underscores the massive scale of the expectation resting on Dasharatha's shoulders. The machinery of the state and society is primed for a coronation. Sumantra, witnessing this, is further convinced of the day's auspicious nature, unaware that this gathering will soon turn into a crowd of mourners. It highlights the public stake in Rama’s coronation.
