Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सज्जं तिष्ठति रामस्य वालव्यजनमुत्तमम् ।
चन्द्रमण्डलसम्काशमातपत्रं च पाण्डुरम् ॥ ॥२-१५-१०॥
sajjaṃ tiṣṭhati rāmasya vālavyajanamuttamam । candramaṇḍalasaṃkāśamātapatraṃ ca pāṇḍuram ॥ ॥2-15-10॥
Translation
An excellent Yak-tail fly-whisk (Valavyajana) stands ready for Rama, as does the white umbrella (Atapatra) which resembles the orb of the moon.

राम के लिए उत्तम चंवर (वालव्यजन) तैयार रखा है। और चन्द्रमण्डल के समान कान्तिमान श्वेत छत्र (आतपत्र) भी तैयार है।
English Commentary
This verse specifies the two primary insignia of sovereignty: the Whisk and the Umbrella. The "vālavyajanam" (yak-tail fan) represents the comfort and service command of the monarch. The "ātapatraṃ" (sun-shade/umbrella) symbolizes the King's protection over his subjects. The comparison to the "candramaṇḍala" (moon's orb) implies that Rama's rule would be soothing and enlightening, not harsh like the scorching sun. The phrase "sajjaṃ tiṣṭhati" (stands ready) personifies inanimate objects as waiting expectantly for their master, amplifying the pathos of the missing protagonist.
