[ayaṃ pṛcchāmi vacanāt sukham āyuṣmatām aham] ayaṃ pṛcchāmi vacanāt sukhamāyuṣmatāmaham । ॥2-15-18॥
Translation
"On your behalf (based on your words), I will now inquire about the health/well-being of the long-lived King."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"मैं आप लोगों के कहने (वचन) से राजा के सुख (कुशल-क्षेम) और उनके जागने के बारे में अभी पूछता हूँ।"
English Commentary
Sumantra assures the kings that he acts on their "vacanāt" (words/behalf). He uses the respectful term "āyuṣmatām" (the long-lived one) for Dasharatha, promising to inquire about his "sukham" (health/happiness). Sumantra interprets the delay as a health issue or merely oversleeping, not realizing it is a political and emotional catastrophe. His intent is to wake the King and expedite the ceremony, acting as a dutiful messenger.

सुमन्त्र राजाओं से कहते हैं कि वे उनके प्रतिनिधि बनकर जा रहे हैं। 'आयुष्मताम्' (आयुष्मान/दीर्घायु) राजा के लिए एक सम्मानसूचक शब्द है, लेकिन यहाँ यह एक विडंबना भी है क्योंकि राजा दशरथ मृत्यु के करीब बढ़ रहे हैं। 'सुखम्' (सुख/स्वास्थ्य) पूछना शिष्टाचार है। सुमन्त्र का उद्देश्य राजा को यह बताना भी है कि बाहर सभी महत्वपूर्ण व्यक्ति प्रतीक्षा कर रहे हैं, ताकि राजा शीघ्र बाहर आएं। वह अभी भी राजा की वास्तविक स्थिति (कैकेयी के वरदान का प्रभाव) से पूरी तरह अनजान हैं।
