Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
राज्ञः संप्रतिबुद्धस्य चानागमनकारणम् ।
इत्युक्त्वान्तःपुरद्वारमाजगाम पुराणवित् ॥ ॥२-१५-१९॥
rājñaḥ saṃpratibuddhasya cānāgamanakāraṇam । ityuktvāntaḥpuradvāramājagāma purāṇavit ॥ ॥2-15-19॥
Translation
"And (I will ask) the reason for the King's non-arrival even after waking." Saying this, Sumantra, the knower of ancient traditions, went to the gate of the inner apartments.
हिंदी अनुवाद
"और (मैं पूछूंगा कि) जाग जाने पर भी राजा के बाहर न आने का क्या कारण है?" ऐसा कहकर, प्राचीन मर्यादाओं के ज्ञाता (पुराणवित्) सुमन्त्र अन्तःपुर के द्वार पर गए।
English Commentary
Sumantra states his mission clearly: to find the "anāgamana kāraṇam" (reason for non-arrival) of the King who should be awake ("saṃpratibuddhasya"). He is described as "purāṇavit" (knower of the ancients/traditions). This suggests his seniority and wisdom; he is an elder statesman who understands protocol and perhaps instinctively senses when something is wrong in the royal house. He approaches the "antaḥpuradvāram" (gate of the inner chambers), crossing the threshold from the hopeful public sphere into the tragic private sphere.

सुमन्त्र अपना कथन समाप्त करते हैं कि वे राजा के 'अनागमनकारणम्' (न आने का कारण) पता करेंगे। उन्हें 'पुराणवित्' (प्राचीन बातों/परंपराओं का ज्ञाता) कहा गया है। यह विशेषण महत्वपूर्ण है क्योंकि सुमन्त्र ने कई राजाओं का काल देखा है; वे राजभवन के सुख-दुख के पुराने साक्षी हैं। वे जानते हैं कि ऐसी स्थितियों में मर्यादा का पालन कैसे करना है। वे बेधडक भीतर नहीं घुसते, बल्कि द्वार तक जाते हैं, जो उनकी शिष्टता दर्शाता है। इसके साथ ही वह क्षण निकट आ गया है जब सुमन्त्र उस विनाशकारी सत्य का सामना करेंगे।
