निर्जगाम नृपावासान्मन्यमानः प्रियं महत् ।
प्रसन्नो राजमार्गं च पताकाध्वजशोभितम् ॥२-१५-२९॥
Nirjagāma nṛpāvāsānmanyamānaḥ priyaṃ mahat । Prasanno rājamārgaṃ ca patākādhvajaśobhitam ॥ ॥2-15-29॥
Translation
...Sumantra exited the royal residence, thinking that something of great joy (the coronation) was imminent. Cheerful, he looked upon the royal highway adorned with flags and banners.

...सुमन्त्र यह मानते हुए कि कोई 'महान प्रिय' (शुभ कार्य/राज्याभिषेक) होने वाला है, राजमहल से बाहर निकले। प्रसन्नचित्त होकर उन्होंने पताकाओं और ध्वजों से सुशोभित राजमार्ग को देखा।
English Commentary
This verse captures the peak of dramatic irony. Sumantra leaves the palace convinced that the King's urgency is due to the "great joy" (priyam mahat) of the coronation. He interprets the tension as excitement. Stepping out, he sees the royal highway (rajamaarg) decked with flags (pataka) and banners (dhvaja). The external visual evidence supports his happy delusion. The contrast is stark: the festive decorations outside mock the grim reality inside the King's chamber. Sumantra serves as the lens through which we see the unsuspecting joy of Ayodhya. His cheerfulness (prasanna) acts as a narrative device to heighten the emotional impact of the impending disaster. The city is dressed for a wedding, but a funeral is brewing.

यहाँ 'नाटकीय विडंबना' (Dramatic Irony) अपने चरम पर है। सुमन्त्र 'मन्यमानः प्रियं महत्'—अर्थात यह मान रहे हैं कि राजा की हड़बड़ी इसलिए है क्योंकि वे राम का राज्याभिषेक शीघ्र करना चाहते हैं। वे राजा के शोक को अति-उत्साह समझ रहे हैं। महल से निकलते ही उन्हें सजा हुआ राजमार्ग दिखता है, जो उनकी इस गलतफहमी को और पुख्ता करता है। बाहर की दुनिया आनंद में डूबी है, पताकाएं लहरा रही हैं, जबकि भीतर का सत्य अंधकारमय है। वाल्मीकि जी ने यहाँ 'प्रसन्नः' (प्रसन्न सुमन्त्र) और सजे हुए मार्ग का वर्णन करके उस दुखद आघात को और गहरा कर दिया है जो कुछ ही क्षणों में राम और पूरी अयोध्या पर लगने वाला है। सुमन्त्र उस खुशी का प्रतिनिधित्व कर रहे हैं जो क्षणभंगुर है।
