ततो महामेघमहीधराभं ।
प्रभिन्नमत्यङ्कुशमत्यसह्यम् ।
रामोपवाह्याम् रुचिरम् ददर्श ।
शत्रुम्जयं नागमुदग्रकायम् ॥ ॥२-१५-४७॥
Tato mahāmeghamahīdharābhaṃ । Prabhinnam atyaṅkuśam atyasahyam । Rāmopavāhyām ruciram dadarśa । Śatruṃjayaṃ nāgamudagrakāyam ॥ ॥2-15-47॥
Translation
Then he saw the gigantic elephant named Shatrunjaya, resembling a great cloud or a mountain. It was Rama's riding mount, currently in rut (musth), beautiful yet difficult to control with a goad.

तभी उन्होंने विशाल बादलों और पर्वत के समान आभा वाले, राम की सवारी के योग्य, 'शत्रुंजय' नामक विशालकाय हाथी को देखा, जो मदमत्त था और अंकुश को भी नहीं मान रहा था।
English Commentary
Sumantra spots Rama’s personal elephant, Shatrunjaya (Conqueror of Enemies). The animal is described using distinct martial imagery: he is like a mountain or storm cloud. Crucially, he is Prabhinna—exuding the temporal fluid indicating he is in musth (rut). In poetic convention, a king's elephant in musth symbolizes potency, raw power, and aggressive protection. Being Atyankusham (beyond the goad/hard to control) signifies the beast's immense spirit, implying that only a rider of Rama's caliber can tame him. It adds a martial undertone to the festive atmosphere.

द्वार पर राम का शाही हाथी, 'शत्रुंजय', खड़ा है। उसका नाम (शत्रुओं को जीतने वाला) राम के पराक्रम के अनुरूप है। हाथी का वर्णन 'महामेघ-महीधराभं' (विसाल बादल और पर्वत जैसा) है। वह 'प्रभिन्न' अवस्था में है, अर्थात उसके कनपटी से मद (fluid) बह रहा है। हाथियों में यह अवस्था अत्यधिक शक्ति और आक्रामकता की निशानी होती है। 'अत्यंकुशम्' का अर्थ है कि वह महावत के अंकुश की परवाह न करने वाला (अत्यंत शक्तिशाली) है। ऐसे उग्र हाथी को केवल राम जैसा महापराक्रमी ही नियंत्रित कर सकता है। यह दृश्य राम के क्षत्रिय तेज का प्रतीक है।
