पूर्वाम् दिशम् वज्रधरो दक्षिणाम् पातु ते यमः ।
वरुणः पश्चिमामाशाम् धनेशस्तूत्तराम् दिशम् ॥ ॥२-१६-२४॥
Pūrvām diśam vajradharo dakṣiṇām pātu te yamaḥ । Varuṇaḥ paścimāmāśām dhaneśastūttarām diśam ॥ ॥2-16-24॥
Translation
May Indra (wielder of the thunderbolt) protect your East, Yama your South, Varuna your West, and the Lord of Wealth (Kubera) protect your North.

(सीता जी प्रार्थना करती हैं): पूर्व दिशा में इंद्र, दक्षिण में यमराज, पश्चिम में वरुण और उत्तर दिशा में कुबेर आपकी रक्षा करें।
English Commentary
This is a classic invocation of the Lokapalas (Guardians of the Directions). Sita prays to Indra, Yama, Varuna, and Kubera to protect Rama from all four cardinal points. This reflects the Vedic worldview where every direction is governed by a specific deity. As a wife, Sita creates a spiritual shield around Rama before he steps out. The poignancy lies in the context: she prays for his safety in the capital, yet these very deities will be the ones watching over him during his impending exile in the dangerous wilderness.
