जुगोप भ्रातरम् भ्राता रथम् आस्थाय पृष्ठतः ।
ततः हल हला शब्दः तुमुलः समजायत ॥ ॥२-१६-३३॥
Jugopa bhrātaram bhrātā ratham āsthāya pṛṣṭhataḥ । Tataḥ hala halā śabdaḥ tumulaḥ samajāyata ॥ ॥2-16-33॥
Translation
Standing at the rear of the chariot, the brother (Lakshmana) guarded the brother (Rama). Then, a tumultuous noise of "Hala-Hala" arose from the crowd.

भाई (लक्ष्मण) ने रथ के पिछले भाग में खड़े होकर भाई (राम) की रक्षा की। तदनंतर वहां लोगों का 'हल-हल' (अत्यधिक हर्ष मिश्रित कोलाहल) का तुमुल शब्द गूंज उठा।
English Commentary
The word Jugopa (protected/guarded) establishes Lakshmana's role as the protector. Standing at the back of the chariot, he watches over Rama's back, symbolizing his vigilance against any threat. The onomatopoeic phrase Hala-Hala captures the roar of the crowd—a mix of cheers, shouts, and excitement. It vividly portrays the electric atmosphere in Ayodhya. The use of tumulaḥ (tumultuous) suggests the sound was deafening, reflecting the sheer magnitude of public support for Rama.

'जुगोप' (रक्षा की) शब्द लक्ष्मण की भूमिका को 'अंगरक्षक' (Bodyguard) के रूप में स्थापित करता है। वे रथ के पीछे खड़े होकर सतर्क दृष्टि रखे हुए हैं। 'हल-हला शब्द' भीड़ के उत्साह और अनियंत्रित खुशी को व्यक्त करने वाला शब्द है। जब कोई अत्यंत लोकप्रिय नेता जनता के बीच आता है, तो जो अव्यवस्थित लेकिन आनंदित शोर होता है, उसे यहाँ चित्रित किया गया है। यह अयोध्या की प्रजा के राम के प्रति उन्माद (ecstasy) को दर्शाता है।
