Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अनुजग्मुस्तदा रामम् शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ।
अग्रतश्चास्य सन्नद्धाश्चन्दनागुरुभूषिताः ॥ ॥२-१६-३५॥
Anujagmustadā rāmam śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ । Agrataścāsya sannaddhāścandana-aguru-bhūṣitāḥ ॥ ॥2-16-35॥
Translation
Hundreds and thousands of people followed Rama then. In front of him marched warriors, armored and adorned with the fragrance of sandalwood and aloe (aguru).
हिंदी अनुवाद
उस समय सैकड़ों और हजारों लोग राम के पीछे हो लिए। चंदन और अगरु की सुगंध से युक्त, कवचधारी वीर उनके आगे-आगे चल रहे थे।
English Commentary
This verse details the formation of the procession. While the masses follow Rama, the elite guards march ahead. Interestingly, these warriors are described as sannaddhāḥ (armored/ready) but also scented with chandana (sandalwood) and aguru (aloe). This juxtaposition of armor and perfume signifies a festive military parade rather than a march to war. It highlights the prosperity and refinement of Ayodhya's army, who are celebrating their commander's elevation.

यह श्लोक जुलूस की संरचना बताता है। राम के पीछे आम जनता है, और आगे 'सन्नद्धाः' (तैयार/कवचधारी) सैनिक हैं। सैनिकों का वर्णन रोचक है—वे केवल हथियारबंद नहीं हैं, बल्कि 'चन्दनागुरुभूषिताः' हैं, यानी उन्होंने उत्सव के लिए सुगंधित लेप लगाए हैं। यह दिखाता है कि यह युद्ध यात्रा नहीं, बल्कि एक मांगलिक यात्रा है। सैनिकों ने अपनी वेशभूषा में शौर्य और सौंदर्य (Beauty and Valour) का मिश्रण किया है।
