वचोभिरग्र्यैर्हर्म्यस्थाः क्षितिस्थाश्च ववन्दिरे ।
नूनम् नन्धिति ते माता कौसल्या मातृनन्दन ॥ ॥२-१६-३९॥
Vacobhiragryairharmyasthāḥ kṣitisthāśca vavandire । Nūnam nandhati te mātā kausalyā mātṛnandana ॥ ॥2-16-39॥
Translation
Women standing on the mansions and on the ground praised him with excellent words. [They said]: "O delight of your mother! Surely your mother Kausalya is rejoicing today."

महलों पर खड़ी और जमीन पर खड़ी स्त्रियों ने श्रेष्ठ वचनों से राम की वंदना की। (वे बोलीं): "हे मातृनन्दन! आज तुम्हारी माता कौशल्या निश्चय ही बहुत प्रसन्न हो रही होंगी।"
English Commentary
The women, both on the balconies and the ground, articulate the collective sentiment. Their praise is directed towards Kausalya, reflecting the empathy of women for a mother's joy. Calling Rama Mātṛnandana (Delight of the Mother) emphasizes his role as a dutiful son. It is a touching acknowledgment that a son's greatest achievement is his mother's happiness. This praise creates a poignant backdrop, as Kausalya's impending joy is about to turn into the deepest grief.

स्त्रियां राम को देखते ही उनकी माता कौशल्या के भाग्य की सराहना करती हैं। एक स्त्री के लिए दूसरी स्त्री (कौशल्या) के सुख की कल्पना करना स्वाभाविक है। वे राम को 'मातृनन्दन' (माता को आनंद देने वाला) कहकर संबोधित करती हैं। यह संबोधन बहुत मार्मिक है क्योंकि राम वनवास के दौरान इसी 'मातृनन्दन' कर्तव्य को निभाने से वंचित रह जाएंगे। यह श्लोक जनमानस की भावनाओं को वाणी देता है।
