Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अमन्यन्त हि ता नार्यो रामस्य हृदयप्रियाम् ।
तया सुचरितम् देव्या पुरा नूनम् महत्तपः ॥ ॥२-१६-४१॥
Amanyanta hi tā nāryo rāmasya hṛdayapriyām । Tayā sucaritam devyā purā nūnam mahattapḥ ॥ ॥2-16-41॥
Translation
Those women thought thus about Rama's beloved: "Surely, this noble lady must have performed great and pious penance in the past."
हिंदी अनुवाद
वे नारियां राम की हृदय-प्रिया (सीता) के विषय में ऐसा मानती थीं—"निश्चय ही इस देवी ने पूर्वजन्म में कोई महान तप किया होगा (जिसके फलस्वरुप उन्हें राम मिले)।"
English Commentary
This verse reflects the karmic worldview of the time. The women attribute Sita’s good fortune of being Rama’s Hṛdayapriyām (beloved of the heart) to Mahattapaḥ (great penance) performed in previous lives. It implies that such a union is not accidental but earned through spiritual merit. By calling her Devyā (noble lady/goddess), they elevate her status, acknowledging that she deserves Rama through her own virtuous past.

भारतीय दर्शन में सुख और अच्छे संबंधों को 'पूर्व पुण्य' (past merits) का फल माना जाता है। स्त्रियां सीता को केवल भाग्यशाली नहीं, बल्कि तपोबल से संपन्न मानती हैं। 'महत्तपः' (महान तप) शब्द इंगित करता है कि राम जैसा पति आसानी से नहीं मिलता। यह सीता के चरित्र की पवित्रता और उनकी आध्यात्मिक ऊँचाई की लोक-स्वीकृति (public acknowledgement) है। वे मानती हैं कि सीता साधारण स्त्री नहीं, बल्कि 'देवी' हैं।
