वर्धमानगृहैः च अपि रत्न जाल परिष्कृतैः ।
तत् पृथिव्याम् गृहवरम् महेन्द्र सदन उपमम् ॥२-१७-१९॥
Vardhamānagṛhaiḥ ca api ratna jāla pariṣkṛtaiḥ । Tat pṛthivyām gṛhavaram mahendra sadana upamam ॥ ॥2-17-19॥
Translation
With inner apartments adorned with jeweled lattices, it was the best dwelling on earth, comparable to the abode of Mahendra.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह राजभवन रत्नों की जालियों से अलंकृत अनेक ड्योढ़ियों (वर्धमान-गृहों) से युक्त था। वह पृथ्वी पर सर्वश्रेष्ठ भवन था और साक्षात महेन्द्र (इंद्र) के भवन के समान था।
English Commentary
This verse focuses on the intricate detailing of the palace. Ratna jāla implies that the lattices and windows were encrusted with gems, not merely made of wood or stone. Vardhamāna-gṛha refers to the spacious, expanding inner apartments. Valmiki reiterates the comparison to Mahendra Sadana (Indra’s home) to emphasize that this was gṛhavaram (the best of houses) on earth. Highlighting this immense luxury serves a dramatic purpose: it underscores the magnitude of Rama's impending sacrifice. He is about to renounce this pinnacle of worldly comfort for the hardships of the forest.

यहाँ महल के आंतरिक सौंदर्य का वर्णन है। 'रत्न जाल परिष्कृतैः' का अर्थ है कि खिड़कियों और झरोखों में साधारण लकड़ी या पत्थर नहीं, बल्कि रत्नों की जालियाँ लगी थीं। 'वर्धमानगृह' का अर्थ राजा के विशेष कक्ष या ड्योढ़ियाँ हैं जो विस्तार लिए हुए थीं। वाल्मीकि जी पुनः 'महेन्द्र सदन' की उपमा देते हैं, यह पुष्टि करने के लिए कि पृथ्वी पर इससे सुंदर कोई दूसरा भवन ('गृहवरम्' - घरों में श्रेष्ठ) नहीं था। यह ऐश्वर्य राम के आगामी त्याग को और अधिक गहरा बनाता है—वे ऐसे वैभव को छोड़कर वन जाने वाले हैं।
