Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
राज मार्गम् ययौ रामः मध्येन अगरु धूपितम् ।
चन्दनानाम् च मुख्यानामगुरूणाम् च सम्चयैः ॥ ॥२-१७-३॥
Rāja mārgam yayau rāmaḥ madhyena agaru dhūpitam । Candanānām ca mukhyānāmagurūṇām ca samcayaiḥ ॥ ॥2-17-3॥
Translation
Rama proceeded through the middle of the royal highway, which was incensed with Aguru and lined with heaps of excellent sandalwood and Aguru wood.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राम उस राजमार्ग के बीच से गुजरे जो अगरु की धूप से सुगंधित था। वहाँ उत्तम कोटि के चंदन और अगरु के ढेर लगे हुए थे।
English Commentary
Rama moves through the center of the Rajamarga (Royal Highway). The repetition of Aguru and Chandana (sandalwood) emphasizes the distinct aroma filling the streets. The mention of Samcayaiḥ (heaps/piles) of these precious woods suggests they were not just burning a little incense, but displaying massive quantities of raw, fragrant materials as a sign of wealth and reverence. It transforms the public street into a sacred, perfumed corridor fit for a divine king.

यह श्लोक पुनः सुगंध और समृद्धि पर जोर देता है। राजमार्ग के बीच से गुजरना (VIP movement) दिखाता है कि भीड़ उनके लिए रास्ता छोड़ रही है। सड़कों के किनारे 'चन्दन' और 'अगरु' के ढेर लगे होना उस काल की विलासिता को दर्शाता है। ये लकड़ियाँ अत्यंत महंगी होती हैं, और इनका ढेर लगा होना बताता है कि अयोध्यावासी अपने राजकुमार के स्वागत के लिए अपना सर्वश्रेष्ठ धन लुटा रहे थे। यह एक संवेदी (Sensory) अनुभव है—दृश्य के साथ-साथ सुगंध भी।
