Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ददर्श तं राजपथं दिवि देवपथम् यथा ।
दध्यक्षतहविर्लाजैर्धूपैरगुरुचम्दनैः ॥ ॥२-१७-६॥
Dadarśa taṃ rājapathaṃ divi devapatham yathā । Dadhyakṣatahavirlājairdhūpairagurucamdanaiḥ ॥ ॥2-17-6॥
Translation
He saw that royal highway looking like the path of gods in heaven. It was strewn with curd, unbroken rice (Akshata), sacrificial oblations (Havis), parched grain (Laja), incense, Aguru, and sandalwood.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राम ने उस राजपथ को स्वर्ग में देवमार्ग (सितारों की राह) के समान देखा। वह दही, अक्षत (चावल), हवि, लावा (खील), धूप, अगरु और चंदन से पूजित था।
English Commentary
The Royal Highway (Rajapatha) is compared to the Devapatham (Path of Gods/Milky Way). The street is not just decorated but consecrated with sacred items: Dadhi (curd), Akshata (sacred rice), Havis (oblations), and Laja (parched paddy). These are materials used in Yajna (fire sacrifice). By strewing them on the road, the people are treating Rama’s procession as a moving sacrifice or a divine visitation. The atmosphere is charged with sanctity and reverence.

राजपथ की तुलना 'देवपथ' (आकाश गंगा या देवताओं के मार्ग) से की गई है। सड़क पर 'दधि', 'अक्षत', 'लाजा' (खील) आदि बिखरे हुए हैं। ये सब मांगलिक द्रव्य हैं जो पूजा में प्रयुक्त होते हैं। इसका अर्थ है कि प्रजा ने सड़क को ही मंदिर बना दिया है। वे राम के रथ के पहियों के नीचे पवित्र वस्तुएं अर्पण कर रहे हैं। यह केवल स्वागत नहीं, बल्कि एक धार्मिक अनुष्ठान (Ritual) जैसा दृश्य है। राम का गमन किसी देवता की शोभायात्रा जैसा है।
