अद्य उपादाय तम् मार्गम् अभिषक्तः अनुपालय ।
यथा स्म लालिताः पित्रा यथा पूर्वैः पितामहैः ॥२-१७-९॥
Adya upādāya tam mārgam abhiṣiktaḥ anupālaya । Yathā sma lālitāḥ pitrā yathā pūrvaiḥ pitāmahaiḥ ॥ ॥2-17-9॥
Translation
(The citizens prayed): "Being anointed today, may you adopt that path (of kingship) and protect us, just as we were nurtured by your father and by your forefathers before him."
हिंदी अनुवाद
प्रजाजन राम से कहते हैं—"आज अभिषिक्त होकर आप उस कुल-मार्ग (राजधर्म) को स्वीकार करें और हमारा उसी प्रकार पालन करें जैसे आपके पिता और पूर्वजों ने हमारा लालन-पालन किया है।"
English Commentary
Here, the relationship between the King and the subjects is depicted not as ruler and ruled, but as father and children. The word lālitāḥ (nurtured/cherished) is significant. The citizens are asking not just for administrative protection, but for paternal love and care. They implore Rama to accept the burden of kingship and follow the path of his ancestors like Dasharatha and Raghu. This verse outlines the foundation of Rama Rajya, where governance is not about enjoying power but about service and guardianship. The citizens express complete faith that Rama represents continuity and stability in the kingdom's welfare.

यहाँ प्रजा और राजा के बीच का संबंध 'शासक और शासित' का न होकर 'पिता और पुत्र' जैसा दिखाया गया है। शब्द 'लालिताः' (लालन-पालन करना) अत्यंत महत्वपूर्ण है। प्रजा केवल सुरक्षा की मांग नहीं कर रही, बल्कि वात्सल्य और प्रेम की अपेक्षा कर रही है। वे चाहते हैं कि राम उसी राजधर्म का पालन करें जो दशरथ और रघु जैसे महान राजाओं ने किया। यह श्लोक रामराज्य की नींव को दर्शाता है, जहाँ शासन का अर्थ सत्ता का भोग नहीं, बल्कि संतानों (प्रजा) की सेवा और संरक्षण है। प्रजा को विश्वास है कि राम अतीत की इस गौरवशाली परंपरा को न केवल निभाएंगे बल्कि उसे और ऊँचा उठाएंगे।
