स ददर्श आसने रामः निषण्णम् पितरम् शुभे ।
कैकेयी सहितम् दीनम् मुखेन परिशुष्यता ॥२-१८-१॥
Sa dadarśa āsane rāmaḥ niṣaṇṇam pitaram śubhe । Kaikeyī sahitam dīnam mukhena pariśuṣyatā ॥ ॥2-18-1॥
Translation
Rama saw his father seated on a beautiful throne along with Kaikeyi, but the King looked miserable, and his face was parched and withered.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राम ने (अंदर जाकर) देखा कि पिता एक सुंदर आसन पर कैकेयी के साथ बैठे हैं, लेकिन वे अत्यंत दीन दिखाई दे रहे हैं और उनका मुख (दुःख से) सूखा जा रहा है।
English Commentary
The atmosphere shifts dramatically here. Outside there is celebration; inside, deep despair. There is a stark contrast between the śubhe āsane (auspicious/beautiful seat) and the King's dīnam (miserable) condition. Material luxury cannot mask internal agony. The phrase Kaikeyī sahitam (with Kaikeyi) is crucial; she is the architect of this gloom. Rama, expecting a festive father ready to crown him, is shocked to find him with a parched, withered face. This visual dissonance sets the stage for the impending tragedy.

यहाँ से वातावरण में अचानक परिवर्तन आता है। बाहर उत्सव है, लेकिन भीतर गहरा शोक। 'शुभे आसने' (सुंदर आसन पर) और राजा की 'दीन' (दयनीय) अवस्था में विरोधाभास (contrast) है। भौतिक सुख-सुविधाएं (सुंदर आसन) मानसिक पीड़ा को कम नहीं कर सकतीं। 'कैकेयी सहितम्'—कैकेयी का वहाँ होना ही इस संकट का केंद्र है। राम, जो उत्सव की अपेक्षा कर रहे थे, पिता के सूखे हुए मुख को देखकर स्तब्ध रह जाते हैं। यह दृश्य आगामी त्रासदी की भूमिका तैयार करता है।
