Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अप्रसन्नमनाः किम् नु सदा मां प्रति वत्सलः ।
विवर्ण वदनो दीनो न हि माम् अभिभाषते ॥२-१८-१२॥
Aprasannamanāḥ kim nu sadā māṃ prati vatsalaḥ । Vivarṇa vadano dīno na hi mām abhibhāṣate ॥ ॥2-18-12॥
Translation
"He is always affectionate towards me; why then is his mind displeased today? Why is his face pale and miserable, and why does he not speak to me?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"ये सदा मेरे प्रति वत्सल (स्नेही) रहते हैं, फिर आज इनका मन अप्रसन्न क्यों है? इनका चेहरा विवर्ण (पीला/कांतिहीन) और दीन क्यों है और ये मुझसे बात क्यों नहीं कर रहे हैं?"
English Commentary
Rama contrasts Dasharatha’s usual nature with his current behavior. The King, usually vatsala (overflowing with parental love), is now vivarṇa (pale/drained of color). Rama’s questioning is not just curiosity but deep anguish. For a devoted son, his father’s silence is the harshest punishment. By repeating the concern that the King "does not speak to me," Rama indicates that this lack of communication is his primary source of distress. He desperately seeks the cause so he can rectify whatever has gone wrong.

राम यहाँ पिता के स्वभाव और वर्तमान व्यवहार में विरोधाभास (Contrast) देख रहे हैं। दशरथ का स्वभाव 'वत्सल' (संतान पर प्रेम लुटाने वाला) है, लेकिन आज वे 'विवर्ण' (रंगहीन/पीले) हैं। राम का प्रश्न केवल जिज्ञासा नहीं, बल्कि गहरी वेदना है। एक पुत्र के लिए पिता की चुप्पी सबसे बड़ा दंड होती है। राम बार-बार 'न हि माम् अभिभाषते' (मुझसे बात नहीं कर रहे) दोहरा रहे हैं, जो बताता है कि संवादहीनता (lack of communication) उन्हें सबसे अधिक कष्ट दे रही है। वे कारण जानना चाहते हैं ताकि उसका निवारण कर सकें।
