Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अतोषयन् महा राजम् अकुर्वन् वा पितुर् वचः ।
मुहूर्तम् अपि न इच्चेयम् जीवितुम् कुपिते नृपे ॥२-१८-१५॥
atoṣayan mahā rājam akurvan vā pitur vacaḥ । muhūrtam api na icceyam jīvitum kupite nṛpe ॥ ॥2-18-15॥
Translation
"Displeasing the Great King, or failing to carry out my father's command, I do not wish to live for even a moment if the King is angry."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"महाराज को संतुष्ट किए बिना, अथवा पिता के वचनों का पालन किए बिना, या राजा के कुपित होने पर, मैं एक मुहूर्त (क्षण भर) भी जीवित रहना नहीं चाहता।"
English Commentary
This verse represents the zenith of Pitru-Bhakti (devotion to the father). For Rama, the sole purpose of existence is to please his father and obey his commands. He declares that life is meaningless if he is the cause of his father's distress. This statement sets the stage for the upcoming events; when Kaikeyi delivers the order of exile, Rama will accept it instantly because of this very principle. For him, the father's word is Dharma, and failure to uphold it is worse than death.

यह श्लोक 'पितृ-भक्ति' की पराकाष्ठा है। राम के लिए जीवन का उद्देश्य ही पिता की संतुष्टि और आज्ञापालन है। वे स्पष्ट कहते हैं कि यदि उनके कारण पिता दुखी हैं, तो उनका जीवन व्यर्थ है। यह कथन आगे आने वाली घटनाओं के लिए पृष्ठभूमि तैयार करता है। जब कैकेयी राम को वनवास का आदेश सुनाएगी, तो राम इसी सिद्धांत के कारण उसे तुरंत स्वीकार कर लेंगे। उनके लिए पिता का वचन 'धर्म' है, और उस धर्म का पालन न कर पाना मृत्यु के समान है।
