एतत् आचक्ष्व मे देवि तत्त्वेन परिपृच्छतः ।
किम् निमित्तम् अपूर्वो अयम् विकारः मनुज अधिपे ॥२-१८-१८॥
Etat ācakṣva me devi tattvena paripṛcchataḥ । Kim nimittam apūrvo ayam vikāraḥ manuja adhipe ॥ ॥2-18-18॥
Translation
"O Devi, tell me, who am asking, the truth. What is the cause of this unprecedented change in the Lord of Men?"

"हे देवि! मैं आपसे पूछता हूँ, आप मुझे सच-सच (तत्त्वेन) बताइये। मनुजाधिप (राजा) में आए इस अपूर्व विकार (बदलाव) का क्या कारण है?"
English Commentary
Rama demands a direct answer. The word tattvena (in reality/truthfully) implies he wants the bare facts, not excuses. He characterizes the King's state as an apūrva vikāra (unprecedented change/abnormality), emphasizing that this behavior is entirely out of character. Addressing her as Devi, he maintains dignity, hoping she will respond with the grace befitting a queen and mother. Rama’s persistence stems from his urgent desire to diagnose and cure his father's affliction.

राम अब सीधे उत्तर मांगते हैं। 'तत्त्वेन' (यथार्थ/सच-सच) शब्द महत्वपूर्ण है, वे कोई बहाना नहीं सुनना चाहते। वे राजा की स्थिति को 'विकार' (Change/Disturbance) कहते हैं जो 'अपूर्व' (Unprecedented) है—ऐसा उन्होंने पहले कभी नहीं देखा। 'देवि' संबोधन का प्रयोग करके वे कैकेयी को सम्मान देते हैं, यह उम्मीद करते हुए कि वह एक रानी और माँ की गरिमा के अनुरूप सच बताएंगी। राम की यह अधीरता पिता के कष्ट को दूर करने की उनकी तड़प को दर्शाती है।
