न राजा कुपितो राम व्यसनम् नास्य किम्चन ।
किम् चित् मनोगतम् तु अस्य त्वत् भयान् न अभिभाषते ॥२-१८-२०॥
Na rājā kupito rāma vyasanam nāsya kimcana । Kim cit manogatam tu asya tvat bhayān na abhibhāṣate ॥ ॥2-18-20॥
Translation
"O Rama, the King is not angry, nor does he have any ailment. But he has something on his mind which he does not speak out of fear of you."
हिंदी अनुवाद
(कैकेयी ने कहा) "हे राम! न तो राजा कुपित हैं और न ही इन्हें कोई कष्ट (रोग आदि) है। इनके मन में कुछ बात है, जिसे ये तुम्हारे भय (संकोच) के कारण कह नहीं पा रहे हैं।"
English Commentary
Kaikeyi begins her speech with calculating precision. She dismisses Rama's fears of illness or anger to focus specifically on the hidden issue. She claims the King is silent due to tvat bhayāt (fear of you). In this context, "fear" means the hesitation to hurt a beloved son, not physical fear. She shrewdly reframes the King’s agony as hesitation. By suggesting the King is "afraid" to speak, she implies that he wants the deed done but lacks the heart to say it, subtly shifting the burden of action onto Rama.

कैकेयी अपनी बात बड़ी चतुराई से शुरू करती है। वह राम की आशंकाओं (क्रोध या रोग) को खारिज करती है ताकि मुद्दा सीधे 'वचन' पर आ जाए। वह कहती है कि राजा 'त्वत् भयात्' (तुम्हारे डर से) चुप हैं। यहाँ 'भय' का अर्थ राम का खौफ नहीं, बल्कि राम को दुःख पहुँचाने का संकोच है। वह राजा की 'ममता' को उनकी 'कमजोरी' के रूप में प्रस्तुत कर रही है। वह यह जताना चाहती है कि राजा कहना तो चाहते हैं, पर कह नहीं पा रहे, इसलिए अब जिम्मेदारी राम की है कि वे राजा को बोलने के लिए बाध्य न करें बल्कि उनकी इच्छा पूरी करें।
