Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
प्रियम् त्वामप्रियम् वक्तुम् वाणी नास्योपपर्तते ।
तदवश्यम् त्वया कार्यम् यदनेनाश्रुतम् मम ॥२-१८-२१॥
Priyam tvāmapriyam vaktum vāṇī nāsyopapartate । Tadavaśyam tvayā kāryam yadanenāśrutam mama ॥ ॥2-18-21॥
Translation
"You are dear to him; therefore, his speech does not proceed to say unpleasant things to you. But you must essentially do what he has promised to me."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"तुम इनके प्रिय हो, इसलिए तुमसे अप्रिय बात कहने के लिए इनकी वाणी नहीं निकल रही (प्रवृत्त नहीं हो रही)। इन्होंने मुझे जो वचन दिया है, उसे तुम्हें अवश्य पूरा करना होगा।"
English Commentary
Kaikeyi strikes the core of the matter. She explains the silence: the King loves Rama too much to deliver the apriyam (unpleasant) news himself. Immediately, she lays the moral trap: tadavaśyam tvayā kāryam (that must be done by you). She frames her demand not as her personal greed, but as the King's unfulfilled promise. She knows Rama's weakness (or strength) is his adherence to Dharma. By invoking the King's promise, she binds Rama, knowing he will sacrifice anything to preserve his father's honor.

कैकेयी अब सीधे मुद्दे पर आती है। वह राजा की चुप्पी का कारण बताती है—अत्यधिक प्रेम। पिता अपने प्रिय पुत्र से कठोर सत्य ('अप्रियम्') नहीं कह सकते। इसके तुरंत बाद, वह नैतिक जाल फेंकती है: 'तदवश्यम् त्वया कार्यम्' (तुम्हें वह अवश्य करना है)। वह यह नहीं कहती कि "मैं चाहती हूँ", बल्कि कहती है "राजा ने वचन दिया है"। वह राम को 'पिता के वचन' के धर्मपाश में बाँध रही है। वह जानती है कि राम अपने लिए कुछ भी छोड़ सकते हैं, लेकिन पिता की सत्यवादिता पर आंच नहीं आने देंगे।
