एष मह्यम् वरम् दत्त्वा पुरा मामभिपूज्य च ।
स पश्चात्तप्यते राजा यथान्यः प्राकृतस्तथा ॥ ॥२-१८-२२॥
eṣa mahyam varam dattvā purā māmabhipūjya ca |
sa paścāttapyate rājā yathānyaḥ prākṛtastathā ॥2-18-22॥
Translation
Having previously honored me and granted me a boon, the King is now grieving like a common person giving way to regret.

पहले मेरा सत्कार करके और मुझे वर देकर, अब यह राजा एक साधारण व्यक्ति की भाँति बाद में पश्चाताप कर रहे हैं।
English Commentary
Kaikeyi speaks sharply to Rama, describing Dasharatha's silence not as grief, but as regretful hesitation. By using the word 'prakrita' (common/vulgar man), she insults the King's integrity, suggesting he is behaving like a low-class person who makes a promise and then repents giving it. Her strategy is to attack the King's honor in front of Rama. By framing the King's emotional turmoil as a lack of commitment to Truth, she aims to provoke Rama into taking the responsibility of fulfilling the pledge upon himself to save his father's reputation.

कैकेयी यहाँ श्री राम से राजा दशरथ की स्थिति का वर्णन बहुत ही तीखे शब्दों में कर रही हैं। वह राम के मन में यह बात बैठाना चाहती हैं कि राजा अपने वचन से पीछे हटना चाहते हैं, जो रघुकुल की रीति के विरुद्ध है। 'प्राकृत' शब्द का प्रयोग करके वह राजा की तुलना एक साधारण, निम्न श्रेणी के व्यक्ति से करती हैं जो वचन देकर मुकर जाता है। यह कैकेयी की कूटनीति है कि वह राजा के दुःख को 'पश्चाताप' और 'कायरता' का नाम दे रही हैं ताकि राम अपने पिता के सत्य की रक्षा के लिए स्वयं आगे आएं।
