अतिसृज्य ददानीति वरम् मम विशाम्पतिः ।
स निरर्थं गतजले सेतुम् बन्धितुमिच्छति ॥ ॥२-१८-२३॥
atisṛjya dadānīti varam mama viśāmpatiḥ |
sa nirarthaṃ gatajale setum bandhitumicchati ॥2-18-23॥
Translation
Having promised 'I grant the boon,' the Lord of the Earth now wishes in vain to build a dam after the water has already flowed away.

'मैं वर देता हूँ', ऐसी प्रतिज्ञा करके अब यह राजा व्यर्थ ही जल बह जाने पर बांध (सेतु) बनाने की इच्छा कर रहे हैं।
English Commentary
Kaikeyi uses a powerful metaphor here: "building a dam after the water has gone." This implies that the King's hesitation is futile. Once a promise is made ("I give"), the action is irrevocable like water that has flowed past. Any attempt to rethink or withhold the boon now is as useless as trying to stop water that is no longer there. She is essentially closing the door on any negotiation, asserting that the commitment is absolute and the King’s current distress is a wasted effort that compromises his adherence to Dharma.

यहाँ 'गतजले सेतुम् बन्धितुमिच्छति' एक प्रसिद्ध लोकोक्ति (मुहावरा) है। इसका अर्थ है अवसर बीत जाने पर उपाय करना। कैकेयी का तर्क है कि जब राजा ने वर देने का वचन दे दिया है, तो अब उस पर विचार करना या दुखी होना व्यर्थ है। जैसे पानी बह जाने के बाद उस पर बांध नहीं बनाया जा सकता, वैसे ही वचन मुख से निकल जाने के बाद उसे वापस नहीं लिया जा सकता। कैकेयी राजा के मौन को निरर्थक प्रयास बता रही हैं और राम को यह जताना चाहती हैं कि सत्य का उल्लंघन हो चुका है।
