Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
एतात्तु वचनं श्रुत्वा कैकेय्या समुदाहृतम् ।
उवाच व्यथितो रामस्ताम् देवीम् नृपसन्निधौ ॥ ॥२-१८-२७॥
etāttu vacanaṃ śrutvā kaikeyyā samudāhṛtam |
uvāca vyathito rāmastām devīm nṛpasannidhau ॥2-18-27॥
Translation
Hearing these words spoken by Kaikeyi, Rama, standing near the King, became distressed and spoke to that lady.
हिंदी अनुवाद
कैकेयी द्वारा कहे गए इन वचनों को सुनकर, राजा के समीप ही स्थित राम व्यथित हो गए और उस देवी (कैकेयी) से बोले।
English Commentary
Rama is described as vyathita (distressed/pained). His pain stems not from fear of the unknown command, but from the implication that his obedience requires a precondition or a test. For a son who is completely devoted to his father, the suggestion that he needs to be coerced into obedience is hurtful. Despite the harshness of Kaikeyi's tone, Rama maintains his composure and addresses her respectfully in the presence of the grieving King.

राम की 'व्यथा' (पीड़ा) यहाँ इसलिए नहीं है कि उन्हें राज्य नहीं मिलेगा, बल्कि इसलिए है कि उनके पिता और माता उन पर विश्वास नहीं कर रहे। कैकेयी का यह कहना कि "क्या तुम करोगे?" राम के लिए अपमानजनक है, क्योंकि राम की पितृभक्ति जगजाहिर है। अपने ही माता-पिता द्वारा अपनी निष्ठा पर संदेह किए जाने से राम को गहरा आघात लगा। फिर भी, मर्यादा पुरुषोत्तम होने के नाते, उन्होंने क्रोध नहीं किया बल्कि 'देवी' कैकेयी को उत्तर दिया।
