भक्षयेयम् विषम् तीक्ष्णम् मज्जेयम् अपि च अर्णवे ।
नियुक्तः गुरुणा पित्रा नृपेण च हितेन च ॥ ॥२-१८-२९॥
bhakṣayeyam viṣam tīkṣṇam majjeyam api ca arṇave |
niyuktaḥ guruṇā pitrā nṛpeṇa ca hitena ca ॥2-18-29॥
Translation
Appointed by my Guru, father, King, and well-wisher, I would drink deadly poison and even submerge myself in the ocean.

अपने गुरु, पिता, राजा और हितैषी द्वारा आज्ञा दिए जाने पर मैं तीक्ष्ण विष का भक्षण कर सकता हूँ और समुद्र में भी डूब सकता हूँ।
English Commentary
Rama lists four relationships he has with Dasharatha: Guru (teacher/elder), Pitra (father), Nripa (King), and Hita (well-wisher). Each title alone commands obedience; together, they make the King's word absolute law for Rama. Rama asserts he would commit suicide (drink poison/drown) if ordered. This highlights the tragedy: Rama believes his father is his "well-wisher," yet he is about to hear a command that destroys his worldly happiness. It emphasizes Rama's total surrender to patriarchal authority and Dharma.

राम अपने पिता के लिए चार विशेषणों का प्रयोग करते हैं: गुरु (पूज्य/शिक्षक), पिता (जन्मदाता), राजा (स्वामी), और हितैषी (भला चाहने वाला)। इनमें से किसी भी एक रूप में दी गई आज्ञा का पालन करना धर्म है, और दशरथ तो चारों हैं। विष पीना और समुद्र में डूबना अत्यंत कठिन कार्य हैं, फिर भी राम कहते हैं कि वे बिना संकोच यह करेंगे। यह दर्शाता है कि राम का विश्वास अपने पिता के प्रति अटूट है—वे मानते हैं कि पिता जो भी कहेंगे, वह धर्मसंगत और 'हित'कारी ही होगा।
